From the first week of creation, God built rest into the world, and then commanded it as a gift. This week, practice stopping. Each day, pray the call to worship and opening prayer, reflect on the day's word, and pray for those who are weary.
Call to Worship: "For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation." (Psalm 62:1)
Opening Prayer: God of rest, quiet my hurried heart, and teach me to trust that the world is held in your hands, not mine. Amen.
Day 1 — Rest Built In (Genesis 2:3)
Pray for: those who never seem to get a day off
Try this: Begin your day with one full minute of silence before you pick up your phone.
Ask yourself: What do I believe would fall apart if I stopped?
Day 2 — Enough for Today (Exodus 16:29)
Pray for: families worried about having enough
Try this: Leave one task unfinished on purpose, and trust it will wait.
Ask yourself: Where do I struggle to believe there will be enough?
Day 3 — Remember You Are Free (Deuteronomy 5:15)
Pray for: those who labor in hard or unjust conditions
Try this: Name one thing that drives you like a taskmaster: your inbox, your calendar, or the voice that says "not enough."
Ask yourself: What has been acting like a master in my life?
Day 4 — A Delight (Isaiah 58:13)
Pray for: children and students carrying full schedules
Try this: Do one thing today purely for joy, not productivity.
Ask yourself: When did I last enjoy something without needing it to accomplish anything?
Day 5 — Wait in Silence (Psalm 62:1-2)
Pray for: those who cannot rest because of grief, worry, or sleepless nights
Try this: Spend five minutes in silence, with no phone, no music, and no list.
Ask yourself: What do I hear when everything else goes quiet?
Day 6 — Made for Us (Mark 2:27)
Pray for: those who work on Sundays so others can rest, like nurses, first responders, and store clerks
Try this: Spend one evening device-free.
Ask yourself: Is my rest a gift I receive or a rule I'm afraid of breaking?
Day 7 — Come Away (Mark 6:31)
Pray for: our own congregation, that we would be a place where the weary find rest
Try this: Put one time of rest on your calendar for next week, and protect it.
Ask yourself: How will I keep stopping after this week ends?
Closing Prayer: Lord of the Sabbath, thank you for rest I did not have to earn. Root me in your peace, and make my stopping an act of trust. Amen.
